Best Guitar Players Ever!

best guitar players everFor this lesson on How To: Guitar, I want to talk about some of the best guitar players ever that I would definitely suggest you listen on your how to play guitar journey.  Everyone has favorite guitarists, and the guitarists on this list are some of mine.  In addition to these guitarists, I strongly urge you to listen to a variety of the best guitarists in as many musical styles as you can.

Buddy Holly

Buddy Holly is one of the original innovators of rock and roll and is considered one of the best guitar players ever. His strong rhythm abilities and songwriting skills brought him to the top of the charts.  He may not be playing speed metal sweep picking but his choice of notes and chord patterns are studied by many beginning guitarists.  I’d urge you to listen to Buddy Holly and try to envision what it’s like to write a simple pop hook that people can sing along to.  Try playing some  random patterns on your guitar and see what you can come up with.

Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix is considered one of the best guitar players ever. His command of the instrument, highly evolved techniques, songwriting skills and live presence all combine to make him a legend of the guitar.  My favourite performance of his is the Live at Montery festival.  His first song Killing Floor is a scorcher.  Check this song out for an example of extremely intense rhythm guitar mixed with improvised fills.  Jimi Hendrix must be studied in order to have any appreciation for the potential of the guitar as both a rock instrument and as a composition tool.

Jimmy Page

Jimmy Page’s guitar style evolved from British rock and blues as a session sideman in the 60s.  As part of Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page crafted some of the most legendary rock guitar songs in history.  His use of multitracking and blues based guitar solos helped to make Led Zeppelin a staple of rock radio. Jimmy Page should definitely be studied for his use of rock guitar riffs, multitracking and songwriting skills. His riffs especially are renowned as being some of the best guitar riffs ever and are a staple of nearly every beginner guitarists repertoire.

Randy Rhoads

Randy Rhoads played guitar two of the most classic heavy metal albums: Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman.  His advanced neo classical lead style coupled with solid catchy riffs gave Ozzy a string of hits.  Learning Randy Rhoads riffs and solos is nearly essential in learning how to play guitar.  In terms of heavy metal, he is one of the best metal guitar players ever.

Dimebag Darrell

Dimebag Darrell was known as one of the modern masters of the guitar. His ability to write heavy, yet catchy, riffs and his advanced technique with solos using the whammy bar, fast picking and blues-based notes helped to make Pantera one of the biggest metal bands in the world.  I would confidently say that Dimebag is one of the best guitar players ever.

Best Guitar Players Ever!

Thanks for taking the time to read this lesson in my continuing series on How To: Guitar.  The reason I have talked a bit today about the best guitar players ever is because I think it is important for students of the guitar to seek out and learn from certified masters of the instruments.  Every one of these guitarists is renowned as having an original and unique style and while they may have been ground breaking, I can almost guarantee that every one had a solid foundation in music theory in order to be able to write and improvise on the guitar at an advanced level.  This list is rather brief and not nearly comprehensive so I will be talking about more of the best guitar players ever in future lessons.  In the meantime, some other guitarists you should check out include Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, John Frusciante, Jack White, Steve Vai and Angus Young to start.

You can also check out Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists for more great guitarists to start learning from.
