History of the Guitar

History of the Instrument!history of the guitar

The earliest known 6-string (acoustic) guitar that is very similar to those we are familiar with today dates back to the late 1700′s. However, many related instruments go back at least 5000 years. The electric guitar was introduced in the mid 1900′s and quickly gained popularity. Guitar playing has therefore developed over the course of hundreds of years. Many early artists used basic pentatonic and blues scales to play the guitar. As time went on, more and more techniques were introduced and the guitar became a much more diverse and important instrument in the production and playing of almost all styles (with certain obvious exceptions).

Awesome Guitarists!

Important guitarists of the past who I believe that you should listen to and study in order to become great on the instrument yourself: Robert Johnson, Buddy Holly, BB King, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Angus and Malcolm Young (AC/DC), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Al DiMeola, Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne), Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Frank Zappa, John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Darrel Abbott (Pantera), Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), Jack White (The White Stripes). As our lessons progress, I will reference material to the playing of some of these artists so I urge you to listen to them if you do not enjoy the styles of music; as a student of the guitar it is your duty to seek out and learn from a variety of different musicians.
